RI bus riders protest proposed service cuts
Posted by jcashmanPROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Dozens of regular bus riders have gathered at Providence’s main transit hub to protest proposed service cuts to public transportation.
The protesters wore signs and used bullhorns to voice their opposition to the cuts Monday at Kennedy Plaza, a downtown transit center.
Rhode Island’s Public Transit Authority is trying to close a $4.1 million budget shortfall in large part by making cuts to service statewide. Under the plan, some routes would be eliminated and others would operate less frequently. RIPTA board members plan to vote on the cuts later this month.
Pawtucket resident Mary Hall was one of the protesters. Hall is disabled and cannot drive. She says she relies on buses to go shopping or to medical appointments. She says transit is too vital a resource to be cut.
